Ember Kitchen | Austin Central Library | Subterra Agave Bar
This one broke our usual pattern in the best way. Instead of dinner and a straight drive home, we built a whole loop out of it: live-fire dinner at Ember Kitchen, tucked inside the old Seaholm Power Plant downtown, a stroll through the newly redone Austin Central Library, and a nightcap one floor down at Subterra Agave Bar. Dinner, a walk, something to talk about, and a drink to close it out — four hours, four very different rooms.
The building alone is worth the trip — poured concrete pillars, exposed structural pipes from its power-plant days, and a multi-level dining room that looks straight down into an open kitchen working a charcoal Josper oven. Everything on the menu comes through that fire in one way or another, and it shows: bold, smoky, contemporary Latin flavors, plated for sharing.
After dinner, instead of heading straight for a second drink, we walked down to the Central Library — the redesigned $125 million building a few blocks from Seaholm. Neither of us had spent real time in it, and it turned out to be the most unexpected part of the whole night. We rode up to check out the 3D printers on the fourth floor, wandered the Blu-ray and DVD collection, and got pulled into the cookbook section — a massive collection donated by longtime Austin Chronicle food editor Virginia Wood, which felt fitting for a night that started with dinner.
We walked back to Seaholm and went downstairs — literally, into the basement — for Subterra Agave Bar. It's a moody, underground room built around a curated agave list: mezcal, tequila, and craft cocktails, in a space that feels like its own speakeasy separate from Ember Kitchen upstairs. It was the right way to slow the night back down after the walk.
By the time we sat down at Subterra, the night had already given us three completely different rooms to talk about — the fire and noise of Ember's kitchen, the quiet of the library stacks, and now the dim, underground hush of the bar. That's the part we keep coming back to: a date night doesn't have to be one long dinner. Sometimes the best version has a few short chapters instead.
