Bat Watching
from a Boat

One of the most uniquely Austin date nights: sunset on Lady Bird Lake, dinner and wine on the water, and thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats taking flight beneath Congress Avenue Bridge.

Why this belongs on your Austin date-night list

It's not just dinner. It's a whole Austin experience.

Austin is home to the world's largest urban bat colony. The Mexican free-tailed bats make their home under the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge, and watching them emerge over Lady Bird Lake is one of the city's signature experiences.

Sure, you can stand on the bridge and watch the bats. But getting out on the water changes the experience completely. You're surrounded by the skyline, the lake and the sunset—and you can turn the whole thing into a private dinner date.

“For a date night, this is the kind of Austin experience that feels special without feeling overly formal.”
Our date night

We turned the boat into our own floating dinner table.

When we went, there were three other couples out on the smaller boats at the same time, but our boat still felt intimate and relaxed. We brought a bottle of wine, and Capital Cruises provided the glasses and ice bucket after we requested them.

For dinner, we had food from the Hyatt Regency Austin delivered for the cruise. They provided the plates, and it basically felt like having room service—but on a boat.

1. Start before sunsetPlan to be on the water with enough time to settle in, order your food and enjoy the changing light over downtown Austin.
2. Bring a bottle of wineBring your favorite bottle and ask Capital Cruises about the wine-glass and ice-bucket setup when booking.
3. Make dinner part of the experienceCapital Cruises offers plated, room-service-style catering from the Hyatt Regency Austin for its private 2–8 passenger dinner cruises.
4. Watch the bats take over the skyAs the sun disappears, keep your eyes on the Congress Avenue Bridge. The emergence is the grand finale.
How we'd plan it

A simple, unforgettable Austin date night

1

Book the boat

For an intimate dinner, look at Capital Cruises' private 2–8 passenger Duffy boats. Their current offering includes a two-hour boat rental and plated catering options.

2

Time it for sunset

Bat cruises operate seasonally. Capital Cruises currently lists public bat tours from March through October and its bat-watching page describes the season as March through mid-November.

Tip: ask for the best departure time for the date you choose.

3

Make it yours

Bring wine, add dinner, and let the boat become your private table. For a larger group, consider one of Capital Cruises' Donut Boats.
